This is the first in a series of tips on this subject from Mae Bain. Today’s tip is that Mae restores here foil to a fresh burnish by dipping in a mixture of equal parts salt/water and vinegar then rinse with water and dry before you solder. Mae does this for every copper foil piece in her work. She also emphasizes that it is very important to burnish each piece very very well as it is flux and residues under the solder that cause the ‘white mold ” or oxidation of the piece.

From Mae Bain, Careful cutting and Grinding

The better your pieces fit together, the less time you will spend fussing over your solder bead.Every time you resolder a line, you push the adhesive from the copper foil out from under your solder bead, making it more likely your foil will not stay tight to the glass.

Careful Cleaning After Soldering

I use dishsoap first (Sunlight Liquid) and an old toothbrush. I spend a lot of time brushing th esoap into my solder bead. both sides. I rinse well, dry with a flannel rag. I take an exacto knife with a #11 blade and check both sides of the glass for overlaps, trim evenly, and use the tip of the blade to scrape off any adhesive that has collected.

Shine the Glass

Shine the glass using a glass wax, dried to a haze and a flannel rag. I use a nail file with a rag wrapped around it, to go over each piece of glass as close to the solder bead as I can get, flip to the other side.

These tips will help reduce corrosion for years, but time works away at all the solder and every few years I clean my own pieces again, through all processes abd it really keeps them looking great. I have some pieces that are sixteen years old and look like new.

Good Luck , Mae Bain
