Oliver Jones at St. Paul’s United

Featured

On Friday August 19th I had the privilege of hearing Oliver Jones http://www.justin-time.com/artists.php?lang=en&aid=283, give a inspiring workshop at St. Paul’s United Church in Charlottetown. http://www.stpaulschurch.ca/ the workshop was part of the PEI Jazz and Blues Festival, http://www.jazzandblues.ca/2011/news.

While listening to Oliver Jones talking about his long career in music, highlighting the importance of practice and mentorship I took in the beautiful windows by the MacCausland Studios,http://stainedglasscanada.ca/articles/mccauseland.htm  these are lovely windows with a high degree of skill and design. I hope you’ll drop by to see them soon. Please use the comment section to give me feedback on your own favorites windows in PEI.

Stained Glass at Dorje Denma Ling

Featured

When I travel I always try to take the time to look at stained glass where ever it may be. Last week my daughter attended Shambala Sun Camp, http://www.antigravitystudios.com/suncamp/index.php in Tatamagouche Nova Scotia.

When we went to collect her following the Camp my mother who is a practicing Buddhist took us for a tour of the shrine rooms at Dorje Denma Ling, these are some photos of those lovely windows.

these windows are the work of Randy Hester, now a Nova Scotia glass artist, see more of his work here,

I am also a huge fan of this studio in Toronto, the artist is a Buddhist nun, http://www.yulokod.ca/index_2.html

Propeller 15th Anniversary

Featured

Fifteen years ago myself and some other recent graduates of the Ontario College of Art began Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts. We wanted to make a space where emerging artists could have access to exhibition space without huge fees and and atmosphere where we’d support one another. By a dint of hard work and some miracles the space is still running. I’m pleased that this month a group exhibition of past and current members will celebrate that fifteen year history.

June Newsletter

Featured

Well it has been the wettest coldest June in years, quite miserable actually. I’ve been working out some technical problems with getting the posts to appear on the web page . I am resolving to try and post on the subject of stained glass more frequently.

I’ll start with a little summer reading, a charming novel was published last year called Clara and Mr Tiffany. The book by Susan Vreeland authentically conjures up the working conditions for women in the turn of the century and the detail will ring true with anyone who has labored over a stained glass project. http://www.svreeland.com/tiff.html

The top news of the day is the Celebration of Craft Exhibition opening at the Eptek Centre tomorrow night at 7 p.m in Summerside. We have a great Face Book page set up for it, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Celebration-of-Craft-2011/217141254985338

My home studio/shop is now set up for visitors so feel free to call and drop in while you are out exploring the the Island this summer. http://firehorsestudios.ca/firehorse-studios-the-shop

The Glass Art Canada Newsletter is out, http://www.glassartcanada.ca/events.php?showpage=3

That is all for now, please comment with ideas for future topics.

Newsletter

Season’s Greetings to you all, the move has been successful and I am now smoothing out the work flow at home.
We have set up photos of the Mini Shop on the web site, http://firehorsestudios.ca/firehorse-studios-the-shop. What you cannot see in the photo are all the crates of glass. I have accumulated rather more than I might use in this life time. So if you are looking for glass, the best thing to do is call and see if I have what you are looking for before coming. The advantages of the home studio will be no parking issues and flexible times. I will be available from 8 to 8 every day provided it works for me.
I will not be selling fusing glass just stained glass. I will be doing a December order so if you are looking for something I can order it. Full sheets are 8 square feet of glass, I can also order individual rolls of solder or foil. Visit the Hollander Glass website to see their full range and please give me a catalogue number as I won’t have time to research this for you. http://www.hollanderglass.ca/
My old space on Water St is now home to the Artisan Gallery and collection of fine art and PEI Crafts.
They will not be carrying glass but Moonsnail Soapworks next door will be carrying Firehorse Products.
I have a few links for you, some parts of Stained Glass Quarterly are now online, http://stainedglassquarterly.com/
Here is a link to some photos of the “Women’s Window” a great piece of glass and history, http://museum.msu.edu/museum/msgc/oct10.html
A new artist to me is Sylvia Laks from Costa Rica have a look at her beautiful work, http://www.sylvialaks.com/commissioned_stained_glass.php
My Face Book page has really replaced this newsletter, with updates and links to all sorts of technical information and glass artists around the world on a ongoing basis I highly recommend that you join us there. Scroll down my links page to find a Face Book link or search Firehorse Studios on Face Book.
